“See, it must be the back stairs to number 45”
Mitchel immediately gets there with Katrin following right behind him.
As they are right in front of the door, he says in a low voice.
"It is not cordoned off, let's go up and see if we can get into the apart-
ment.” Carefully he opens the door and they slip into the semi-dark narrow stair-
case where a faint smell of smoke is the predominant smell.
"It's not as bad as you might think" says Katrin.
“No, not in relation to what we have otherwise seen" answers Mitchel.
They start going up the stairs where several of the steps are miss-
ing just like the railing several present are just hanging or completely torn away
or removed. Mitchel says as they have both come up to the third floor and is
standing in front of the back door of Uno Hinterglaub's fortified apartment. He
puts his hand on the handle and as he pushes the door up he says.
"Right now my curiosity is greater than my anxiety" Katrin, on the other
hand, suddenly seems extremely insecure. She shakes her hands lightly and the
colour of her face is pale. She whispers:
"I have nausea. Do you think there can be dead people in there? I think it
smells… weird"
Mitchel doesn’t answer heavy question, but instead peeps his head inside
to see if anyone was in there. They both go in through the door and stand in the
old abandoned kitchen. Mitchel says loudly.
"Hello, hello is anyone here"
There is no answer, everything is quiet, from where they stand they can
not even hear the traffic on the pike on the other side, which is quite as if they
weren’t in the middle of Berlin, but in the countryside.
"It does not look like there has been anyone here, for a very long time
look here" Just like in the gallery, there is a fine but thick layer of dust all over it
and there are no prints from shoes or hands to be seen anywhere ”
Katrin continues, her complexion is back in her face and instead of the
timid expression she possessed a while ago, she now looks around curiously and
says.
"It's like stepping into a museum"
