EFFECTIVENESS OF BIOMETRIC TECHNOLOGY AMONG
BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENT
MARIEL KAREN FRANCESCA G. OBEDOZA
General biometric systems are well known in public and systems based on the fingerprint
recognition. This study aimed to have a deeper and clearer understanding on the effectiveness
of biometric technology among business establishment it sought to determine: The profile of
the business when classified as to: type of business, form of business, number of years in
operations, number of employees, number of years in using biometric technology system, type
of biometric technology system currently being used and criteria for choosing the system. The
level of effectiveness of the biometric technology in terms of attendance and payroll system. The
problems encountered by the respondents in utilizing the biometric technology system.
The following are the salient findings of this study: Most of the respondents-businesses
are in merchandising such as supermarkets, department stores and appliance centres. Majority
of them are operating as corporation, for twenty one years and above and been using the
biometric technology for four to six years and with two hundred and above .employees. All of
the respondents are using the finger type of biometric technology system.
The following are the conclusions drawn from the findings of this study: Majority of the
respondents came from the corporation in form of the business because it has a large number
of employees and their Human Resource Department uses the biometric system in tracking the
tardiness and absentees of the employees. The entire establishments used the fingerprint type
of biometric system because when compared to the other type, the hardware and software
used in finger type is less expensive. As to the criteria in choosing the system, the researcher
concludes that the universality criterion indicates the requirements for unique characteristic
of each person in the world. The biometric technology system is effective on both attendance
tracking and to the payroll department because they can easily track the tardiness and absences
of each employee per department. The causes of the problems encountered, particularly on the
non-recognition of fingerprint is the dryness of the finger.
The following recommendations are forwarded: Since majority of the establishments
were in the form of corporation, it is highly recommends the continuous use of biometric technology
in terms of time tracking of the employee’s attendances and tardiness. The management and the
administrator of the biometric system should highly implement the used of biometric technology
in terms of time tracking. The management should have properly functioning Uninterruptable
Power Supply (UPS) so when electricity is down there is an emergency power for the biometric
system to back up the database of the attendance. Firewall and antivirus must be properly
installed so that the files of the biometric system are not prone as corrupted files.
