COMPETENCIES OF TEACHERS IN MULTIMEDIA INSTRUCTION IN ARALING
PANLIPUNAN
CECILLE U. MOLINA
This study determined the level of competences of teachers in multi-media instruction
in Araling Panlipunan in the public secondary schools in Urdaneta City Division, SY 2015-2016.
Specifically, it sought to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, civil
status, highest educational attainment, number of years teaching Araling Panlipunan, number of
relevant trainings for the past three years, degree of utilization and current multi-media devices
used. Likewise, it looked into the extent of multi-media utilization in teaching Araling Panlipunan
along the basic topics such as: Mga Pangunahing Konsepto ng Ekonomiks, Maykroekonomiks,
Makroekonomiks, Mga Sektor ng Ekonomiya at mga Patakarang Pang-ekonomiya nito, degree
of utilization of ICT resources along the areas of preparation, instruction and assessment/
evaluation, the significant difference on the respondents’ extent of multi-media utilization in
teaching Araling Panlipunan when grouped according to profile variables, and the significant
difference on the respondents’ degree of utilization of ICT resources when grouped according
to profile variables.
Majority of the respondents teachers belong to the age bracket 26 – 30, female,
married, with post graduate study units, have a teaching experience from 1 – 5 years, had
attended division seminars for more than seven times and all used laptops. The extent of multi-
media use in terms of the basic concepts of economics had a grand weighted mean of 4.37
denoting a descriptive equivalent of Always. The degree of utilization of ICT resources along
the areas of preparation, instruction and assessment/evaluation had a grand weighted mean of
3.94 which describe the degree of utilization as “Often”. Generally, the profile variables of the
respondent-teachers are comparable in their level of multi-media competences except for sex,
civil status and training in the regional level, therefore in general most of the respondents have
similar competences in the use of multi-media instruction in Araling Panlipunan. The length of
teaching experience of the respondent –teacher is associated with the degree of utilization of
ICT resources.
Since majority of the teachers have just earned their masteral unit and only 3 had a
doctoral degree, all concerned teachers are encouraged to enhance their professional growth
by finishing their graduate and and further enroll in post graduate studies. Concerned teachers
must upgrade their multi-media skills by attending relevant trainings in the regional, national and
international levels to further hone their knowledge, skills, competencies which will improve their
craft in teaching Araling Panlipunan. Araling Panlipunan teachers should level up the “utilized”
descriptive equivalent rating by enrolling in an on-line or short term skill development program
in the use of multi-media resources.
