INSTRUCTIONAL COMPETENCE OF MUSIC TEACHERS
IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
ELIZA O. GALERA
This study determined the level of instructional Competence of Music teachers in the
public schools of Urdaneta City Division during the SY 2015-2016. Specifically, it looked into the
following: profile of the Music teachers in terms of age, sex, civil status, highest educational
attainment, number of years teaching Music and number of relevant trainings attended; the
level of instructional competence of Music teachers; significant difference between the level
of instructional competence of Music teachers across their profile variables; and the significant
relationships between the level of instructional competence of Music teachers and their profile
variables.
The findings are summarized in order of which the problems and hypothesis were
raised in the study 1) majority of the Music teachers belong to age bracket 31-40 that is 58.8
percent, females 37 or 72.5 percent, married that is 37 or 72.5 percent, have earned their
masteral units 33 or 64.7 percent, have 5 years or less teaching experience in Music that is 27 or
52.9 percent and most of them have attended 7 or more trainings in the division level 2) the level
of instructional competence of Music teachers in the public elementary schools had an overall
weighted mean of 3.82 denoting a descriptive equivalent of “Competent” 3
Based on the results of the findings, the researcher arrived at the following conclusions
1) the Music teachers widely vary in their profile and at certain instances; their variations are in
extreme cases and are distinctively female dominated group of teachers 2) the Music teachers
in this study, are performing impressively more than well enough in Music instruction, but if
excellence is yet possible, then their present performance is a stepping stone towards the
highest level of performance 3 )he Music teachers are not significantly comparable in their level
of instructional competence in Music at certain times and at certain situations, but there are
times and cases when they are on the other hand comparable.
In the light of findings and conclusions, the following are hereby recommended 1) the
Music teachers should take their initiatives to complete their masteral degree and should undergo
professional upgrading through trainings and seminar workshops in the national and international
levels 2) the Music teachers should always inspire and soar high for excellent performance in
Music Instruction by being innovative and transformative teachers 3) more appropriate and
relevant variables should be explored to better determine the instructional performance of
Music teachers 4) Similarly, there should be careful selection of variables that can predict
better performance of Music teachers in instruction. 5) Further research should be conducted to
determine the level of instructional competence of teachers from another perspective.
