ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE I PUPILS IN MATHEMATICS AND
ARALING PANLIPUNAN TAUGHT IN THE MOTHER TONGUE,
ILOKO AND BOLINAO
MARILOU A. DELA ROSA
This study involved 89 Grade 1 pupils from 14 classes, under one (1) teacher per class
in the Schools District of Bolinao. The specific problems are as follows: No. 1 focused on the profile
variables, namely: age, sex, monthly family income, highest educational attainment of mother and
father, and occupation of mother and father. No. 2 determined the academic performance of the
respondent-pupils in Mathematics and Araling Panlipunan taught using the mother tongue, Iloko
and Bolinao. No. 3 determined whether or not there are significant differences in the academic
performance of the respondents in Mathematics and Araling Panlipunan, taught in the mother
tongue, Iloko and Bolinao, across the profile variables. No. 4 determined whether or not there are
significant relationships between the academic performance of the respondents in Mathematics
and in Araling Panlipunan, taught in the mother tongue, Iloko and Bolinao, and the profile variables.
The following are the salient findings of this study:The respondents are typical
Grade 1 pupils, mostly age 6 years olds, females, belonging to families whose incomes are
below 10,000 Php, whose mothers and fathers are elementary graduates, doing menial jobs,
for a living. The academic performance of the respondent-Grade 1 pupils in Mathematics and
Araling Panlipunan, taught in the mother tongue, Iloko and Bolinao, is a little above average
with means of 9.46 in Mathematics, 11.83 in Araling Panlipunan, and 21.29 in total score. The
score distributions are Negatively skewed, with 4.416 standard deviation in Mathematics, 2.825
standard deviation in Araling Panlipunan, and 6.563 standard deviation in the total score.
The following are the conclusions drawn from the salient findings:T The academic
performance of the respondents in Mathematics, and in Araling Panlipunan is associated with
the variables, age, monthly family income, highest educational attainment of parents, and
occupation of the father.
The following are the recommendations forwarded: DepEd should continue to
recruit and enroll six-year old in Grade 1. Early enlistment of these pupils will encourage
parents to enroll their six-year old children in Grade 1. The use of the mother tongue in
teaching Mathematics, and Araling Panlipunan should be continued. However, the teachers
should undergo in-service training on strategies and innovative techniques, to enhance their
instructional competences, and thus improve the academic performance of the pupils. School
officials should develop trainings, which could be accredited to higher year levels, for parents
for the purpose of increasing their educational attainment. Likewise, training programs for
parents should be developed and implemented, to improve the earning capacity of parents.
