A Story of Two Goats
Over a river there was a very narrow bridge. One day two goats
crossing it from opposite sides met in the middle. Since the
bridge was so narrow, there was room only for one goat to cross.
"Go back," said one goat to the other, “there isn’t enough room
for both of us to cross.”
"Why should I?” Replied the other goat.
"Why don’t you go back?” He added.
“Because I’m stronger than you,” answered the first goat, “now
go back and let me cross.”
"You are not stronger than me,” said the second goat.
“We'll see about that,” quipped the first goat, lowering his
horned head, preparing to fight.
“Stop!” Yelled the second goat. “If we fight here on this
narrow bridge both of us will fall into the river below
and drown.”
“Then what shall we do?” Asked the first goat.
“I have a plan.” Replied the second goat. “I will lie
down, and you will walk over me and cross.” He said,
laying himself down on the floor of the bridge; and
just as he did that, the first goat recognized his
virtue and wisdom and, as lightly as he could, walked
over him and crossed. The wise goat then rose up and crossed too.
