  he Bahrain Historical and Archacological Society was originally forncd in 1953
but was inactive fron 1959 until 1970 when it was re-organivcd to coincide with the
hird lnternational Conference on Asian Archaeology, held in Bahrain in March
]970. Since that time it has been consistently active, involved in various activities as
part of its aim to encourage the study of the history of Bahrain as well to promote
the nowledge of the country's cultural and archacological heritage.

  he activities of the Society are numerous; they include lectures, discussions, and
visits to archaeological sites as wcll as places of historical or cultural significance. In
1977, with the help of a grant from the Ministry of iInformation, the BHAS
produced a film entitled Pictures of an lsland'. In addition to this journal,
iimun, which is published annually, a guideboo, he lslands of Bahrain, written
by Angela Clare, was published in 1981; and an Arabic version of this guideboo
was published in 1986.

   Many agencies contribute to the success of the Society's activities notably the
Ministry of Information and the irectorate of Antiquities and Museums, he
Ministry aids the BHAS with most of its publications especially ilmun. In 1980 the
Ministry gave the Society its own premises in Juffair. Lectures and other special
events were held in the main hall of these premises and the library, which contains
one of the best collections of wors on Bahrain's archaeology, and history was
located there. hans to the generosity of the Ministry of Information the Society
has now moved into a much better premises in Juffair opposite the irectorate of
Antiquities, where the Library is now housed.

   he Society has around 200 members, both local, throughout the Gulf, and
overseas, including several University libraries. Anyone wishing to apply for
membership is invited to write to the membership Secretary BHAS, P.O. Bo
5087, Manama, Bahrain. Subscription per annum is B.10/-.
