R. MOHAME A. ALKHOLAI

                                          (PROFILE)

  As Vice President of the BHAS from 1979 to 1988, Mohamed A. AIhoai has
played a ey role in many areas of the Society's activities, in particular in its
editorial functions, where his command of both Enlgish and Arabic have proved
invaluable.

  A graduate of English Literature at the Uiversity of Cairo, Egypt,
r. AIhoai went on, in 1969, to gain an M.A. in the same subject at Leeds
University, England. He then too a si-month course in Administration of the
Arts at the Polytechnic of Central London, and in 1978 studied for a Ph. in
Arabic rama at the University of London, England.

   A large part of his woring life has been spent teaching and lecturing, having
taught in various departments of education and teacher training colleges in Bahrain
from 1958 to 1971.

   In 1971, he was appointed Superintendent of Culture and Arts with the Ministry
of Labour and Social Affairs. his was followed by irectorships of both Culture
and Arts (1978-86), and Publications (1986), at the Ministry of Infomration.

   For almost a decade, the society has been the beneifciary of
r. AIhoai's literary sills. In 1986 he translated "he lslands of Bahrain', the
Society's authoritative guide to the histoyr, culture, crafts and archaeology of
Bahrain, and has for many years edited the Society's journal "ilmun'.
