The police took an active part in apprehending persons using or in possession of opium, hashish
and liquor, but in spite of stern measures the proportion of the town population who make use of
liquor and narcotics is steadily increasing.
Smuggling decreased considerably, only five cases were detected, 21 persons were prosecuted
and 16 of them were convicted.
Although 26 fires were reported during the year and in some cases several saaf houses were
destroyed in one fire no persons lost their lives nor was anyone seriously injured.
