In October 1950, a 4a. value was added to the definitive issue,
and on May 3rd, 1951, the xAw. -2xAa. appeared in new colours. On the
same date the G.B. “Festival” high values were issued with 2, 5 and 10
rupee surcharges. Interesting varieties were soon found on the 2 rupee
where, on Row 7/2, a third thinner bar appears between the two normal
bars cancelling the sterling value; and on the 5 rupee, where a similar
third bar appears above the two normal bars on Row 2/2. In neither
ease was the variety constant on the whole of the first printing (1,000
sheets of 40 - 4 x 10 of the Rs2 and 1,250 sheets of 40 of the Rs5), as
stamps from the same positions arc known without the extra bar.
The Registration Sheets show the extra bar on the Rs2 but not on the
Rs5: but it is the Rs2 variety that is the scarcer of the two.

* Almost 20 years after they were issued, it was discovered that the
Rs2 (1955) and RslO (1953) had both appeared with a second type of
overprint. The first overprint was type-set with clear sharp letters.
Type II appears to have been a plate overprint with letters giving the
appearance of heavy worn type. The main difference between the two
types of the Rs2 lies in the position of the “2”. In Type I, the figure
and word are both in line, whereas in Type II the “2” is raised in
