Type 10. Type 10A
An American A.P.O. was established at Muharraq from June
15th. 1944 to late 1945 to serve the U.S. Air Force Unit which was
operating at what is now the International Airport, and also to handle
mail from U.S. Naval vessels operating in the Gulf. This A.P.O. had
been in Basrah from 23.6.42 to 15.10.43 and was subsequently in
Cairo from January 1946.
Two cancellations are known (Types 10 and 10A): the former
has been seen on a stampless “Free” cover from a U.S. ship, and the
latter on a cover to New Zealand bearing U.S. stamps to the value of
5c. and a sender’s address “Bahrain Petroleum Co. Ltd., A.P.O. 816,
C/O Postmaster New York”. The facilities of A.P.O. 816 were also
made available to civilian workers employed on the Fluid Catalytic
Cracking Unit, as its construction at Sitra Refinery, although for
Bahrain Petroleum Company, was a U.S. Government project.
