Confusing Words – Which/That

Many people have trouble deciding whether to use the words which or that to start a clause.
If the sentence will make sense without the clause, it‟s called a nonrestrictive clause. A

nonrestrictive clause is introduced by the word which. If the sentence would not make sense
without the clause, it‟s called a restrictive clause. Restrictive clauses are introduced by that.

Determine whether which or that should be used in each sentence?
1. I like to watch movies _____ make me laugh.
2. Marissa is going on a trip ______ will take her all the way around the world.
3. My mother says _____ I have to clean my room before I go.
4. My favorite movie, _____ I‟ve watched at least ten times, is Sound of Music.
5. When we go to my grandmothers, _____ is a four hour drive, I usually sleep in the

car.
6. My brother only likes food _____ is really sweet.
7. I didn‟t realize _____ Marcus could run so fast.
8. When did you find out _____ Chelsea got the lead in the play?
9. I didn‟t realize _____ there would be no school today.
10. I wanted to find a book _____ I could read on the train trip.
11. It snowed last night, _____ only surprised people who hadn‟t watched the weather report
12. You won‟t have any trouble finding my house, _____ is the only red house on the street.
13. My best friend ignored me today, _____ hurt my feelings.
14. The floods, _____ lasted five days, caused a huge amount of damage.
15. Five students won the attendance prize, ____ is only given to students with perfect

attendance.
