Why are you interested in the Regional Waste Authority Director position with Merced County
Association of Governments? Tell me a bit about what you know about the Association.
I look at myself as a servant leader. I look for a position that fits my skillsets. I went through this in detail
when I came across it and looked at my skillset and it matched very clearly. I look at myself as an asset
for whoever I work for. I have tried to come across information in that area and any issues that may be in
place. Was not lucky in coming across it.
Please describe your most recent position and day-to-day responsibilities.
Was a General Manager - title was division manager. Daily responsibilities were to review staff - make
sure that all staff were in place and onsite as required. If I needed additional help I would inquire around
availability. All of the other fluent departments - I would determine what needs to be accomplished that
day or that week just to make sure that every department was up to speed. Ontop of that I prepared and
established safety meetings each week. I would look at the market and discover where I could find
growth in the market. I had to see what was available and relevant in sustaining growth.
In my last position I mentored 4 people. I brought all of the maintenance operations together with
myself - we were going to take over a new municipal contract. I helped them work with me and manage it
to make sure it was being done properly. I'm into team building and teamwork. I would l meet with
municipalities and governments. Our landfill is operated by the county. I worked with them to determine
what kind of service they have.
I also have to compile all of this information and return it via an onsite presentation. I can tell you I took a
company in 16 months that was not profitable and made it fully profitable before I department.
Left WastePro - were going through a restructure.
Has managed as many as 50.
Please provide any insights you might have managing solid waste divisions within the public-
sector.
My goal there is to manage the public as servants and to make sure we are financially sustainable.
Charge the customers appropriately. We need to make sure we are rendering appropriately.
I've been doing it for a lot of years - working with mayors, city council members, in some cases the
municipal CFO - working at different levels. Working with them to make sure you are meeting the RFP -
interviewing them to make sure we are all on the same page - if we are the winner - it's actually sitting
down with them and making sure that the metrics that I am mapping fit with the RFP - could be a start
date - I was working with them and we were laying out the metrics with the services that we were
applying. I had staff meetings with members on different occasions. I worked with the mayor in various
arenas, working through business. Looking to the future and what we are going to look like in a few
months. Are there losing customers, what exactly needs to be addressed. I have worked with municipal
staff at all levels.
Please describe your experience in evaluating technology and operational procedure utilized
in a department and your approach to implementing change, if needed.
I actually have a background in technology -I handle operations on both sides. I did implement
technology on both those occasions - employee change - it's all done through communication - personal
buy in - you have to bring it to them get input - overcome any clarifications that need to be clarified -
