SUPPORTING NURSING EXCELLENCE AT MICHIGAN MEDICINE
In accordance with the Institute of Medicine’s
recommendation to improve patient outcomes by increasing
Master’s (non-MSN) the proportion of nurses with a Bachelor of Science in
6% Nursing (BSN) or higher to 80%, Michigan Medicine lists the
MSN BSN degree as a desired qualification on all Registered
4.5% Nurse (RN) job postings. We strive to recruit and retain
nurses who hold a BSN or higher degree to support best
practices in patient care.
FY25 Nursing Workforce Data:
Associate The new-hire rate for nurses with a BSN or higher was
18.8% 81%.
The overall percentage of all RNs at UM Health holding
a BSN or higher is 88.3%.
While we encourage the pursuit of advanced nursing
education, we also value the contributions of associate
degree nurses—many of whom are current U-M employees
who have already demonstrated dedication and excellence
within our organization.

OUR NURSING WORKFORCE CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN
EXPERIENCE LEVELS OF OUR FY25 HIRES
NURSING WORKFORCE EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT AT MICHIGAN MEDICINE
In FY 2025, 39% of all RN hires at Michigan RN
Medicine joined us with less than one year of RN
experience. This data reflects our growing success
in attracting more experienced nurses than in
previous years, resulting in a healthy mix of skill <1 yr
levels that strengthens our nursing community and 38.6%
enhances patient care.
As the demand for advanced practice
professionals such as Nurse Practitioners (NPs) 1 yr+
continues to rise, Michigan Medicine is proactively NP
increasing its hiring of newly graduated NPs. By 61.4% <1 yr
providing opportunities for NPs to begin their 19.1%
careers with us, we can retain more of our
talented nurses after they complete their NP 5+ yr
education. In the past, many nurses benefitted 34.9%
from tuition reimbursement and educational
support while obtaining their NP credentials, but
ultimately left the organization to begin their NP
careers elsewhere.
By expanding direct NP hiring, we optimize our
workforce, allow nurses to advance their careers
within Michigan Medicine, and continue to support
lifelong learning and professional growth among 1-4 yr
