MAINTAINING NURSING WORKFORCE EDUCATION STANDARDS
UM Health is dedicated to sustaining the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendation that at least
80% of the nursing workforce hold a baccalaureate degree (BSN) or higher. According to the IOM,
higher levels of nursing education are associated with improved patient outcomes, including lower
morbidity and mortality rates.
To support this goal, managers who wish to hire a nurse without a BSN must follow a special approval
process. This ensures that we continue to prioritize baccalaureate-prepared nurses in our hiring
practices while maintaining a highly qualified nursing workforce.
