NEW HIRES: 2 YEARS FROM NOW 38
ANTICIPATING THE NEEDS OF OUR NURSING DEPARTMENTS: FUTURE PLANS AND
RETENTION FOCUS
Understanding nurse retention and career intentions is vital for strategic workforce planning. Our FY25 survey
indicates another increase in the percentage of new hires planning to stay on their current unit—continuing a
multi-year upward trend. This suggests our hiring practices increasingly place nurses in roles well-matched to
their skills and preferences, improving both satisfaction and unit stability.
Despite positive trends in short-term retention, this year’s survey also revealed a significant rise in nurses
considering employment at other healthcare institutions after their second year at UM Health. This emerging
challenge may impact future retention and highlights the importance of focusing on intervention programs
and strategies that support nurse engagement and professional growth beyond the first year.
