INSIGHTS FROM RN AND APP EXIT SURVEYS
During fiscal year 2025, the nurse recruitment team at Michigan Medicine continued
its ongoing effort to understand—and improve—retention among nurses and advanced
practice providers. When Registered Nurses (RNs), Advanced Practice Registered
Nurses (APRNs), and Physician Assistants (PAs) left the organization, each received an
exit survey designed to capture their perspectives and experiences during their time
at Michigan Medicine.
The survey explores a variety of topics, including reasons for leaving, future plans, and
suggestions for changes that might help improve retention. Of the 385 terminations in
FY25, about 14% completed the survey.
Respondents shared a range of reasons for leaving, with the most common factors
cited being retirement, work schedule, commute, and clinical or advancement
opportunities. Despite their decision to leave, many reported personal and
professional fulfillment, strong relationships with peers, and meaningful connections to
the patient population made it difficult to leave their roles.
The survey also asked questions related to satisfaction with communication, teamwork,
and manager support. Responses highlighted these areas as opportunities for
improvement, suggesting that efforts to address them could strengthen retention.
Results from the exit surveys are compiled and shared twice a year with nursing
leadership. These reports provide an opportunity to review feedback and explore
trends for improvement to impact retention in the long term.
