INTERNAL CAREER TRANSITION SUPPORT 46

FACILITATING NURSE RETURN TO WORK AND ALTERNATIVE PLACEMENT

Assisting nurses with placement needs is a highly coordinated effort involving close collaboration between the Return to
Work (RTW) Coordinator, HR Leave Team, HR Business Partners, Work Connections, Nurse Recruitment, Labor Relations,
UMPNC, nursing leadership, and the employees themselves. This multidisciplinary team supports nurses seeking a return to
work after long-term disability, extended medical leave due to illness, surgery, or injury, or the onset of new medical
conditions that prevent them from remaining in their current positions.

Many nurses face barriers to returning to their previous roles, such as the position being filled, inability to accommodate
temporary or permanent restrictions, or the need for ADA accommodations. RTW cases are often lengthy and complex,
involving multiple contact points and extensive interdepartmental coordination. Nurse Recruitment and HR hold monthly
meetings to discuss open cases and referrals, working together to maximize coordination and resolve challenging
    placements.

Difficulties arise due to factors including nurses’ inability to meet posted qualifications, departments unable to
accommodate restrictions, extensions of leave of absence, low RN vacancy rates, repeat placements after unsuccessful
orientation, and communication or engagement issues among staff and leadership. Nurse recruiters also provide internal
support to RNs exploring alternative work options for career advancement or those affected by poor unit fit or reduction in
    force (RIF).

For FY 2025, placement assistance yielded the following results:
24 RTW assistance requests from HR
58 successful RN placements (including both RTW and Alternative Work Option [AWO])
26 AWO assistance referrals from units and HR
12 RN/NP placements due to RIF in areas such as ADTU, AA Dialysis, and VUC.
