Course Catalogue A-Z
French
(Edexcel)
The course builds upon all the essential skills from GCSE, giving pupils the opportunity to
tackle some important day-to-day issues in French. This course will broaden pupils’ horizons
and open their minds to other cultures, providing a real advantage in their future careers:
employers are constantly looking for people with language skills.
Some pupils say that studying A level French is like doing General Studies - one gets the
chance to study a wealth of different topics and issues, and all in another language.
There are three units of study for A level: listening, reading and translation. There are also
listening and reading comprehension questions related to topics studied during the course
combined with a translation from French into English.
Written response to works and translation: an essay on a literary text they have studied, an
essay on a film they have studied and a translation from English into French. Speaking: a
speaking test where pupils will talk about a subject that interests them and discuss an area
of independent research. This means that pupils will study one work of literature and one film
in French and they will have to write an essay on each in French.
Entry requirements:
Grade 7 or higher at GCSE.
