Geography
(Edexcel)
Michael Palin, a past president of the Royal Geographical Society, said that “Geography is a
subject that holds the key to the future.” If pupils want to find out more about the world they
live in; the contemporary issues facing humanity and understanding the processes in the
natural environment then this course is for them. If pupils want an A level with an element of
fieldwork investigation then this qualification will engage their interest.
The following units are studied during the A level course:
Unit 1 Dynamic Landscapes
• Tectonic Processes and Hazards
• Landscape Systems, Processes and Change
• The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity
• The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security
• Climate Change Futures
Unit 2 Dynamic Places
• Globalisation
• Shaping Places
• Superpowers
• Global Development and Connections
Unit 3 Synoptic Investigation
The specification contains three synoptic themes within the compulsory content areas:
• Players
• Attitudes and actions
• Futures and uncertainties
• The synoptic investigation will be based on a geographical issue within a place-based
context that links to the three synoptic themes.
Unit 4 Independent Investigation
Pupils will define a question or issue for investigation. The topic may relate to any aspect of
geography contained within the specification. Their investigation will incorporate fieldwork
data (collected individually or as part of a group) and own research and/or secondary data.
The fieldwork which forms the focus and context of the individual investigation may be either
human, physical or integrated physical-human.
Entry requirements:
Grade 6 at GCSE.
