Language and Composition
(American Program only)
Part of the American Program, this one year course compels pupils to become skilled
analytical readers in a variety of rhetorical contexts in written prose. With a focus on writing,
pupils become aware of interactions among a writer’s purpose and reader’s expectations.
The core of the subject is the required reading which enables pupils to become informed
citizens, which permits the pupils the capacity to have substantial discussions concerning
significant issues across the globe. Pupils are required to write several essays constructing
coherent arguments and presenting research in a logical manner. A lengthy research paper is
required with the knowledge and use of MLA and APA format for citations purposes.
This course will involve ongoing teacher assessment followed by an externally set and marked
examination at the end of the year.
Literature and Composition
(American Program only)
Literature and Composition is a one-year course in which pupils’ reading, writing, and
oral skills are strengthened through the study of novels, drama, poetry, short stories and
expository prose from the 1600s to the present. Most of the authors are canonical, and
more recent authors of literary repute hail from the Caribbean, South America and other non-
Western countries to celebrate a holistic picture of an ever shrinking world.
The course is divided into six themed units: Identity and Perception, Truth and Illusion,
Alienation, Madness, Divinity—Fate and Free Will, and Heroes—Traditional and the
Unexpected. Each theme has one or two key texts (a novel or play), and theme-related poems,
short stories and expository prose are studied to deepen understanding, compare and
contrast against the key text.
