Chemistry A
(OCR)
The study of chemistry helps pupils understand the world that surrounds us, and supports
the study of other sciences. It facilitates entry to degrees in medicine, engineering, dentistry
and earth science and to a wide variety of careers.
The course is designed to encourage learners to become responsible for their own learning
and confident in discussing their ideas. Pupils will also develop problem-solving, written and
oral communication, research and presentation skills throughout the course.
AS and A level specifications can be co-taught.
The content covered in the A level course is split into six teaching modules:
• Module 1 – Development of practical skills in Chemistry
• Module 2 – Foundations in Chemistry
• Module 3 – Periodic table and energy
• Module 4 – Core organic Chemistry
• Module 5 – Physical Chemistry and transition elements (A Level only)
• Module 6 – Organic Chemistry and analysis (A Level only)
Practical activities are embedded within the learning outcomes of the course to encourage
practical activities in the classroom which contribute to the achievement of the Practical
Endorsement.
Entry requirements:
A minimum of two grade 6s in Science at GCSE, although grade 7s are preferred. It will be
advantageous to have studied Triple Science and pupils will be need a grade 6 for Chemistry
overall and have passed the other two sciences with a grade 5 or above. Pupils will also need
to have passed GCSE Mathematics with a grade 6 or higher.
