Art and Design
(OCR)
Studying Art and Design gives pupils an exciting opportunity to use their creativity, skills
and imagination to explore their own responses to the visual world. This course will develop
pupils’ technical skills through experimenting with a range of media including: painting,
drawing, ceramics, printmaking and digital media. They will learn to respond and engage
critically with both contemporary and historical aspects of the visual arts.
The UK’s Cultural and Creative Industries are booming, with areas such as Software and
Gaming, Publishing, Media and Advertising, Film, Fashion, Design, Architecture and Television
employing over 2.5 million people and contributing nearly £80 billion to the UK economy.
They are set to be of central importance to the UK’s future success and economic well-being.
Studying Art and Design fosters and develops skills which are essential to the employability
of young people in this new jobs market where creativity, innovation, problem-solving,
adaptability and resilience will be needed.
Year 12 provides a foundation to the full A level, giving pupils the freedom to experiment with
materials and techniques and to take creative risks. They will have the opportunity to develop
a wider skill base through artist and teacher-led workshops and visiting gallery visits.

analysing the work of artists or ideas which relate to their practical work.
