Biology
(AQA)
A level Biology is an interesting and stimulating course that opens pupils’ minds to the
wonders and intricacies of living organisms. A level Biology is also a useful stepping stone
to the future study of many science related courses at university such as Medicine, Nursing,
Forensics, Biological Sciences, Biochemistry and Ecology. Biology is fundamentally an
experimental subject and there are numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to
link theory to reality, and to equip pupils with the essential practical skills they need. There
will be no coursework but practical skills and understanding will be assessed in the final
exam and pupils will need to complete the required practicals to receive their Certificate
of Competency.
Topics covered in the A level course:
• Biological molecules
• Cells
• Organisms exchange substances with their environment
• Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
• Energy transfers in and between organisms (A level only)
• Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments (A level only)
• Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems (A level only)
• The control of gene expression (A level only)
Entry requirements:
A minimum of two grade 6s in Science at GCSE, although grade 7s are preferred. It will be
advantageous to have studied Triple Science and pupils will be accepted onto this course if
they have achieved a grade 6 for Biology overall and passed the other two Sciences with a
grade 5 or above. Pupils will need to have a grade 6 or higher at Mathematics GCSE.
