Animal Management
(Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate)
The animal management sector is a rapidly developing service industry meeting the broad
demands of the animal-owning and interested public. There are many different career paths
for those wishing to work in animal management which range from working with small
to large, domesticated and exotic animals in areas such as agriculture, animal welfare,
business, science and wildlife conservation. If pupils are considering a career in the sector,
or even if they are simply passionate about animal management and care, then this
qualification could be for them.
As a two-year Level 3 qualification it carries the same UCAS tariff as an A level, so it can be
taken as part of a mixed set of Sixth Form subjects for the purposes of university application.
Alternatively, if pupils are planning to head into employment after Sixth Form then the work
experience component of the course provides valuable skills and potential contacts in
the sector.
The mandatory units include:
• Animal Welfare and Ethics
• Practical Animal Husbandry
• Animal Behaviour
• Animal Health and Disease
• Work Experience in the Animal Sector
All pupils taking this qualification will be required to engage with sector employers as part
of their course, including 75 hours work experience with an employer in the sector, where
opportunities will be given to develop practical skills in preparation for employment.
Entry requirements:
This qualification is suitable for all pupils accepted into the Sixth Form at Kingham Hill; there
are no subject-specific requirements, though of course an interest in animals and their
management is essential!
