CHAIN AND CROWN SINNETS
illustrates the way HALF KNOTS or TWo-STRAND CROWNS are made,
two of them forming a SQUARE or REEF KNOT which separates each
two links of the sinnet.
2906. Sinnet of square knotting. This is the same as the previous
sinnet but with all the parts drawn together. It bears a close rela-
1905
tionship to the SOLOMON BARS in macrame but it lacks the inert
foundation cords which pass lengthwise through the latter (see
~2496).
2907. A series of identical HALF KNOTS of two strands makes a
CROWN SINNET of two strands, the surface of which helixes to re-
semble quite strongly a plain-laid rope.
2.906
2908. With four strands worked alternately in pairs, and LEFT and
RIGHT HALF KNOTS tied alternately, the resulting sinnet is square.
The same face is kept constantly toward you, as you work.
2909. Four strands worked alternately in pairs and tied in identical •
HALF KNOTS make a bulkier ROUND SINNET than '# 2907.
2910. An EIGHT-STRAND HALF KNOTTED SINNET. Seize the strands
and right half knot the opposite strands of two parallel pairs. Then
left half knot the other two parallel pairs and continue to alternate.
Keep the same side of the sinnet constantly toward you while you
work.
2911. A CROWN SINNET of three strands. Crown in one direction,
in this case right-handed. Lay one strand to the right in front of the
next strand to the right. Lay that strand tightly over the end of the
first-laid strand and in front of the next strand. Lay the third strand
over the end of the second strand and stick it through the bight left
by the first-laid strand. Draw all strands tight. This forms what is
termed a SINGLE CROWN. The sinnet is built up of successive CROWNS
exactly like the one just described. The success of these sinnets de-
pends on drawing up the CROWNS evenly.
2912. FOUR-STRAND CROWN SINNET is made in the same way as the 2911 2~12.

foregoing.
2913. FIVE- and SIX-STRAND CROWN SINNETS are made in the same
way.
The sinnet may be made with even more strands if a core is used,
six being about the limit when there is no core.
2914. With three strands make alternate RIGHT and I,EFT CROWNS. , ,
•
The result is roughly triangular. 2. 9 I
2915, 2916. Sin nets of four and five strands, made "\vith alternate 2'}ts
RIGHT and LEFT CROWNS.
The above sinnets from '#2908 to '#2916 are round, with the ex-
ception of '#2914.
