2940. WALL SINNET. This is sometimes seen, but stretchf's so
easily that it is scarcely practical unless it has a core. An old sample
of this with a core is shown on the becket of the second bag lanyard,
among the frontispieces.
2941. This shows the sinnet with a single strand serving as core.
This will take care of the stretch, but all the strain is on the core.
2942. With two groups of strands alternately walled the sinnet
is larger, handsomer, stronger and has little tendency to stretch.
2943. A netting 1leedle is a practical tool for making a sinnet that
builds very rapidly. But it may be tied either with the netting neetlle
or with the fingers alone. The needle is preferable if any consider-
able length is to be made, or if the material is small. Sew over and
over, or under and under, through the last loop made, and draw
up carefully and evenly. The result is a nicely rounded helix.
2944. The same sinnet, with the needle thrust through two loops
each time instead of one, bulks larger and has a better appearance.
2945. The same sinnet with the needle thrust through three loops
at each operation. This would seem to be about the practical limit
of the sinnet, which, il'l this size, resembles left-laid rope. Draw up
the next to the last stitch after each passage.
2946. A FIGURE-EIGHT CHAIN. This does not seem to have much
merit, but it is always given in books on the subject. A netting
needle is the best tool for the purpose. Start with the top of the
design and tuck through the bottom bights of the figure eights al-
ternately down through the left bight and up through the right
bight.
2947. The same diagram is perhaps more often workea down
through the right and down through the left, which makes a regular
over-one-and-under-one design.
2948. An elaboration of the FIGURE-EIGHT design makes an effec-
tive FLAT SINNET. This should be done with a netting needle and
drawn up after each stitch. The cycle of this is down through two
bights and down through two other bights.
2949. A ROUND SINNET may be made on the same diagram. The
cord is led down through two bights on the right and up through
two bights on the left. The resulting sinnet superficially resemble~
