THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS
2917. CROWN SINNETS are often made of flat thongs (leather ~nd
woven shoelaces). Sinnet watch guards and bracelets appear periodi-
cally, and are generally made by the amateur, while umbrella guards,
leashes and dog collars are commercial products shown in Chapter
41. When made of flat material, these are almost invariably of
reverse crowning (the first CROWN being to the right, the second to
the left). The simplest employed is the regular four-strand Uh9IS),
three strands not being very satisfactory. Flat fabric shoestrings may
2')\1 be used when no thongs are handy. The first diagram shows the
bottom of the initial CROWN. Middle the strands, cross them as shown
in this diagram, and crown them. Now, holding the first knot bot-
tom up, as pictured, cover the initial crossing with a second CROWN
as indicated by the arrows. Continue, with the same side up, to build
the sinnet with alternate LEFT and RIGHT CROWNS.
2918. An OBLONG CROSS-SECTION, CROWN-AND-REVERSE SINNET is
made in the same manner. The single thong which goes lengthwise
must be about forty per cent longer than the other two. If all the
thongs are drawn up with equal tension this will be very handsome.
If desired, two more crossing cords may be added, which will double
the width of the sinnet.
2919. This CROWN diagram, shown in Alston's SetTl1l1111ship, for
finishing off a fender, makes a very large and handsome cube if,
after tying alternately, kit and right, at the proper length, the ends
of the strands are pointed and tucked back into the structure.
2920. This shows Alston's CROWN worked into a sinnet by crown-
ing first to the left and then to the right. If crowned continuously in
one direction, a large ROUND SINNET would result.
The remaining sinnets on this page are best made in cord; either
banding or fishline will serve.
2921. The diagram shown here will make a sinnet that is more or
less octagonal. It is worked in the same manner as the others but it
may also be tied continuously with a RIGHT CROWN if desired, in
which case it will be round. Compare with'll: 2930.
2922. A decided ELLIPSE, but to hold this shape it must be made
with· REVERSE CROWN. If tied with a continuous crowning to the
right, it will be round.
2923. A rather full ELLIPSE with six strands, the diagram to be
worked with CROWN and REVERSE CROWN .
