                                               3708.  A  locket  ltmyard  of two  cords. The  large  PECTORAL  KNOT




                                       is  Jlli842.  All  the  rest  are  TWO-STRAND  MATTHEW  WALKER  KNOTS,




                                       except the upper left BurrON which is TWO-STRAND  MANROPE  KNOT




                                       Jlli980.  The  necklace  starts  at  the  upper  right  with  an  eye  and  is                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   3110



                                       completed with the MANROPE  KNOT.





                                               3709.  The  following  three  knife  or  whistle  lanyards  were  made




                                       by Edward M. Stetson.



                                              The neckpiece of the first lanyard is a separate section of EIGHT-STRAND




                                       SQUARE  SINNET  with  the ends of FOUR-STRAND  SINNET  doubled  back into



                                       two  long  loops.  The  joints  are  seized  and  covered  with  FOUR-LEAD  X



                                       FIVE-BIGHT  X  THREE-PLY TURK'S-HEADS.  A similar loop is  made for each



                                       leg and is knotted into the first two with CARRICK  Loops before the leg is




                                       made. Put similar TURK'S-HEADS  over the seizings and on one leg make  a



                                       RIGHT  CROWN  SINNET  of  three  strands around  a core of five  to the  next



                                       TURK'S-HEAD,  which  is  FIVE-BIGHT  X  THREE-LEAD  X  TWO-PLY.  From




                                       this point the  sinnet is  reversed to a LEFT  CROWN.  The crowning for  the



                                       right leg is the reverse  of  the left leg. There is  a RUNNING  TURK'S-HEAD



                                       over this section, of larger cord. At the top of the PECTORAL  KNOT  a FIVE-




                                       BIGHT  X  FOUR-LEAD  X  THREE-PLY  TURK'S-HEAD  covers  a  seizing.  The



                                       diamond-shaped  PECTORAL  KNOT  consists  of  BANNISTER  BARS  over  two-



                                       strand cores and all joints are seized and covered with FOUR-LEAD  X  FIVE-



                                       BIGHT  X  TWO-PLY TURK'S-HEADS.  The bottom loop  is  of THREE-STRAND




                                       SINNET,  the TURK'S-HEAD  that is seized  to it is  FOUR-LEAD  X  FIVE-BIGHT



                                        X THREE-PLY and the pendant section above the loop is  a BANNISTER  BAR



                                       with four strands for a core. The RUNNING  TURK'S-HEAD  is  a FOUR-LEAD



                                        X  FIVE-BIGHT  X  THREE-PLY  TURK'S-HEAD  of  larger  material  than  the




                                       sinnet  and  the  three  vertically  central  TURK'S-HEAD  of  the  PECTORAL



                                       KNOTS  are  TWO-PLY  KNOTS  of the same  heavier  material.  All  others  are



                                       of the same material as the cord itself.





                                              3710.  The  bottom loop  of this  lanyard is  THREE-STRAND  SINNET,




                                       the  pendant is  SIX-STRAND  ROUND  SINNET,  the  legs  are  FIVE-STRAND



                                       FRENCH  SINNET  and the  neckband is  SEVEK-STRAND  FRENCH  SINNET.




                                        fhe RUNNING  TURK'S-HEAD  is  SEVEN-LEAD  X  FIVE-BIGHT  X  Two-




                                       PLY.  And the STANDING  TURK'S-HEAD  at the nape of the neck is  the




                                       same.  The  others  are  all  FOUR-LEAD  X  FIVE-BIGHT  X  THREE-PLY




                                       TURK'S-HEADS.  The leg and neckband  joint is  shown in  detail.




                                               3711.  The  third  lanyard  is  of  square  knotting  in  two-inch  sec-




                                       tions. Two strands form the core for each leg. Beginning at the bot-



                                       tom, the loop is THREE-STRAND SINNET/ TURK'S-HEAD, FOUR-LEAD  X





                                       FIVE-BIGHT  X  TWO-PLY/ SOLOMON BARS/ four uncomplicated cords/

                                       Two uncomplicated cords pass  around the neck.




                                               3712.  A  knife  or  whistle  ltmyard.  Middle  two  pieces  of  fishline.




                                       Leave  an  eight-inch  loop  in  one  piece  and  seize  the  two  together.



                                       Tie a FOUR-STRAND  DOUBLE  DIAMOND  KNOT  (Jlli69S)'




                                               Layout  the  two  left  ends  and,  at  six  inches,  seize  in  another




                                       middled  section  to  the  right  ends.  Tie  a  DOUBLE  DIAMOND  KNOT




                                       (JIII6<)S)'  Make  four  inches  of  SQUARE  SINNET  and  add  FOOTROPE




                                       KNOT  Jlli696.  Shape  a  neckhand for sixteen  inches  by winding  spun




                                       yarn around one of the strands and CROWN  SINNET  around this core

                                       with the other three strands.  Tie  a  DOUBLE  DIAMOND  and add four




                                       inches  of  SQUARE  SINNET.  Crotch  and  seize-in  the  two  long  ends




                                       from the first  loop.  Cut out two of the  four  strands  from  the  neck




                                       band  and  tie  SHROUD  KNOT  Jill I S93.  Add  a  RUNNING  TURK'S-HEAD



                                       for  a gathering knot.





                                               3713.  The common marlingspike  lanyard  is  of tarred  hemp  WIth



                                        two LO,,"G  EYE  SPLICES  in it.
