3714. A "life preserver" twenty-two inches long. Becket of FOUR-
STRAND SQUARE SINNET, the lanyard EIGHT-STRAND SQUARE SINNET,
DIAMOND KNOT in end. A leather bag containing shot is needle
hitched and seized around the neck of a knot on the lanyard.
3715. A blackjack, ten and a half inches long, that started out to
be a chest becket. Evidently the sailor's requirements changed as
his ship neared port. The knobs are MANROPE KNOTS, the bolt, eye,
and lanyard are needle hitched. The lead ball is rib bitched.
3716. A blackjack consisting of a rib hitched lead ball, a tarrea
codfish line lanyard, and a DOUBLE KNIFE LANYARD KNOT. .
3717. A wooden "night stick," ten and one half inches long, single
hitched, with a narrow TURK'S-HEAD.
3718. A razor-blade knife. The handle is of wood cross grafted
with ten leather thongs. The TURK'S-HEADS are small tarred fishline,
the guard being FIVE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT X FIVE-PLY.
3719. A cat with seven tails of FIVE-STRAND FLAT SINNET tapered
and whipped ($3460). The knob is a THREE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT X
TWO-PLY TURK'S-HEAD of FLAT SINNET tied over a MANROPE KNOT
(jifi847). The handle is TWELVE-LEAD, FOUR-PLY COACHWHlPPING,
the guard, a FIVE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT X FIVE-PLY TURK'S-HEAD.
3720. A whale ship'S cat-o'-nine-tails with a fourteen-inch handle
of white whalebone. Five cords are middled and seized around a
button on the end of the handle. One tail is cut out.
3721. A thirty-two-inch blackjack. The becket is an EYE SPLICE,
the neck of which is hitched over. The loaded end is also hitched
over. FUUR TURK'S-HEADS (THREE-LEAD X FOUR-BIGHT X THREE-
PLY) are added and the rope is wormed.
3722. A spyglass, covered with COACHWHlPPING put on with a
needle and finished off with a TURK'S-HEAD of larger cord.
3723. A rawhide quirt of three thongs.
Slit two of them in the center to admit a bight for a wrist strap from
the center of the third thong. Taper an eighteen-inch piece d sash cord,
parcel with "electric tape" and cross graft it with six strands (#3563).
Seize in a loop of THREE-STRAND FLAT SINNET. Add two ~EVEN-LEAD X
FIVE-BIGHT X SINGLE-PLY TURK'S-HEADS.
3724. To make a loaded quirt, serve a piece of sash cord with a
strip of quarter-inch wide sheet lead.
Separate the turns of the lead by winding a piece of soft cord between
them. Seize both ends and serve over with butcher's cord. Add a wrist
3120 strap, and loop as jifi 3 723. Make an additional cover for the handle that is
several inches long, first arranging strands as in the center sketch. Leave

312'1 the ends long and seize them. Add three SEVEN-LEAD X FIVE-BIGHT

3725. A quirt lash is tapered both ways from the middle. Attach
to the quirt with a RING HITCH (jifi 1493).
3726. A riding crop with a tapered black whalebone core. If un-
obtainable, rawhide, rattan or elm root will do.
Form a loop of 7/I6-inch leather strap and stop it tightly to the small
end of the core. Take four long leather strips the size of shoestrings. Mid-
dle and form the wrist strap either of FOUR-STRAND SQUARE or FRENCH
SINNET. Seize together and make an EIGHT-STRAND DIAMOND KNOT over
the big end of the core. Then cover the core with EIGHT-STRAND SQUARE
SINNET, seize and cut off where it meets the end loop. Whip the joint.
3727. A dog's leash of three thongs. Taper both ways from the
middle and lay up a wrist strap of THREE-STRAND SINNET.
With six strands tie SINNET KNOT jifi 757. Plat half the length into SIX-
STRAND ROUND SINNET, then layout two strands and complete with FOUR-
STRAND SQUARE SINNET. Form a collar loop with one strand, seize all fout
and tie a DIAMOND KNOT (jifi693). Add TURK's-HEADS where shown.
