“ Singapore Environmentally
Sustainable Plan : A City in a Garden ”
Miss Praepilai Mekhakul
Singapore is one of the countries which has the most
efficient advanced economy in the world with only 700 square
kilometers of land area. Skyscrapers and urban areas full of concrete
may be an expectation of some people, however, as soon as passengers
arrive at Changi Airport, the first attraction they can explore is Jewel,
the world’s largest indoor waterfall; and Forest Valley which has more
than 2,000 trees. As it is being noticed, environmental issues have
been a concern of Singapore since the 1960s when Prime Minister Lee
Kuan Yew began to develop the country to become the Garden City, or
as known as “A City in a Garden”
The beginning of Singapore’s development into a Garden
City was when Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted a Mempat tree in
1963 to launch the tree planting campaign. Since then the community
had continued supporting and committing to this campaign. The
energetic Group Director for National Biodiversity Centre at National
Parks Board, Lim Liang Jim mentioned that “The city’s pioneer
generation understood that if you make a city a nice place to live, then
people will come and invest. Then we moved up.” (‘A city in a garden’:
Singapore’s journey to becoming a biodiversity model, 2018)
