Children are not trophies
There are schools and schools for children and we expect them to learn lot to face
the challenging world as they emerge. Children are in schools almost from 3 years
and in these formative years parents expect their children to get a direction as
come out from schools after 13 years and move forward fulfilling the dreams of
their parents. Here is the fundamental problem. There is nothing wrong in dreaming
for your children to progress in life.
I am reminded here, of the famous guidance from Swami Chinmayananda. In one of
his discourse to parents, he gave a wonderful advice. “Children are not trophies to
be displayed around neighbourhood and showcased”. Each child is a beautiful gift
of god for you to enjoy parenting .It is all about facilitating this child to blossom to
a great human being with values and live fulfilling the children’s dreams. JUST BE A
FACILITATOR AND NOT AN OWNER “.
There is a saying in kannada that goes like this “ Manaye Makkala MODALA pata-
shale” translating to “ Home is the first school of the children”. Parents have lot
of expectations from schools and there is nothing wrong about it. BUT it is not a
barter deal of expectations of services one sided because I have paid for it. Bring-
ing up a child is a collaborative responsibility of parents, teachers and community.
“ It takes a whole village to raise a child”. This proverb is attributed to Africans.
It summarises what it takes to bring a child starting from home, school and the com-
munity. We all together have collaborative responsibility to bring up children with
ethics and values for a brighter future. What they do for their career is not to be
forced on the child but facilitated by teachers and parents based on what the child
is capable and dreaming. Schools are not factories for producing future Engineers or
Doctors . In today’s global opportunity there is ever expanding careers one can
choose from. Bring up the child to be inquisitive, analytical, take failure in its stride
to move forward, working with team collaboratively and respecting other’s view, tol-
erant of others in society. There is so much to instil more than subject matter.
At Diya our Teachers love your children as much as their own if not more and always
look forward to ways and means to help them from their baby step to their teenage
as they step out strong with values embedded in them that will make them more re-
sponsible for their actions.
