Surgical Technique (Open)
Preparation of Pedicle:
Once the surgical approach has been completed and the
pedicles identified, the pedicle is exposed using a
rongeur or burr. The pedicle entry point may be
prepared with the Bone Awl.
Preparation of Pathway:
A pathway is created with the Straight Bone Probe or
Curved Bone Probe. The Bone Probe should be in
contact with the bone at all times. The concave side of
the tip should point medially. It is inserted into the
entry hole and advanced into the pedicle with a series
of limited rotational movements and firm but controlled
pressure. The Bone Probe will follow the path of least
resistance (cancellous bone) and will compact the
cancellous bone of the pedicle. In the event that
resistance is felt, the entry point and trajectory should
be re-evaluated. The Pedicle Probe is laser etched from
25mm to 60mm in 5mm increments. These increments
represent the depth that the Bone Probe has been
inserted as well as to help determine the proper screw
depth.
