Testing the Pathway:
Check the appropriate pathway with the Straight
Sounder to verify that all walls of the pedicle have not
been violated. Cancellous bone should be felt at the
distal end of the pathway. An intraoperative x-ray is
performed with a Straight Sounder in situ if any
uncertainty exists.
Tapping the Pedicle:
The Tap may be used to prepare the pedicle canal.
Choose the tap diameter according to the diameter of
the screws to be implanted. Note that the Zavation taps
are true to size, so if under tapping is desired, choose a
smaller diameter tap.
Once the appropriate Tap is selected, assemble the Tap
to the Ratcheting Straight Handle or Ratcheting T-
Handle.
Insert the Tap in the prepared pathway and screw down
to the desired length. Depth markings on the tap can
be used to estimate the appropriate screw length.
Screw Insertion:
Assemble the Polyaxial Screwriver with either the
Ratcheting Straight Handle or Ratcheting T-Handle. Pick
the appropriate screw in the screw caddy and insert
onto the Polyaxial Screwdriver. Insure that the hex is
fully seated in the screw. The tip of the screw is placed
Retaining Slide Lock in the pedicle entry point. The screw is self-centering
sleeve with a blunt tip and should not be guided but allowed to
find its own pathway into the pedicle. The screws
should be inserted parallel to the endplates until the
last thread is flush with the bony surface. Once the
screw is inserted, the Polyaxial Screwdriver is
disengaged from the screw.
The Polyaxial Screw Head Positioner can be used to
adjust the head position, and the Screw Adjuster can be
used to adjust the screw insertion depth.
