Rod Selection:
Determine the appropriate rod length. Calipers are
provided to estimate the rod length if necessary. (Note
that the calipers measure rod length on one side and
can be used to measure cross connector lengths on the
other)
The use of pre-cut rods facilitates the surgery by
minimizing the time necessary to measure and cut a
long rod to the appropriate length. It is recommended
to bend the rod to the appropriate lordotic curvature
(sagittal plane) to lower the overall construct height and
to improve its biomechanics by reducing the bending
moment and thus reducing the stresses on the pedicle
screws. To maximize ease of insertion, the use of pre-
bent rods are an option, or use straight rods and bend
the rod such that it passes each screw roughly 90
degrees from the axis of the screw. Perform rod
bending outside the operative field using the French
Rod Bender. This is best accomplished by a series of
small adjustments which will bend the rod gradually and
ensure even stress distribution due to bending. Once
the rod is ready for insertion, hold the rod with the Rod
Holder and insert the rod into the pedicle screws.
If the rod is not fully seated in the pedicle screws, then
use the Rod Pusher to help seat the rods fully in the
pedicle screws. A Rod Rocker can also be used for
seating the rod fully in the pedicle screws.
