Group Discussion vs Public Speaking

Public Speaking
● One-to-many communication situations
● Solo performance
● Individual views matter
● Speaker can take a particular position on the topic and speak accordingly

Group discussion
● Many-to-many situation
● Not a solo performance
It means everybody has to share their opinions. Talking only one person
is ordering, it’s not group discussion and other people don’t want to listen to only one person
unless you are giving a public form.
● Apart from individual views, view of the entire group matters.
We need entire group views (from different views) because we have to
gather many views as much as possible so we can see the whole picture. For example, in the
company, people came from different parts, with different perspectives. They need to tell you
what’s going on so that we can see the problems and fix them properly.
● All the members of the group participate & one has to listen to the views of other
members.
Some people, especially among Thai students, don't want to express their thoughts, they
will be invisible. In the company, if you don’t talk, everybody will take the advantages from you or
disregard you. If you want to be visible, you have to participate and listen to what they said, and
see how they develop their thoughts so that you can understand and open your world. That will
be a healthy environment to get things done appropriately and more comprehensively.

Importance of Group Discussion

An inevitable part of the recruitment process, trying to recruit candidates which are the
people who can understand them, who can talk to them. Otherwise, it is difficult to identify and
time-consuming to assess.
