An important part of the process for admission to Graduate schools, especially the MBA
as working with groups is one of the most important parameters of success as a manager that in
MBA schools, it needs to talk a lot (i.e. case studies, discussions).
A number of people who are good at public speaking, who can just only talk to themselves,
or communicate their ideas well and discuss effectively with others in a one-on-one situation,
become tongue-tied in a group situation. In spite of being a very good student, you do not know
how to talk to a group of people and you will not be able to achieve much, compared to the
person who can ask people around and share ideas, and not only talk but listen to people in the
group. Therefore, a group discussion will identify people who have such group communication
skills and people who do not process such group communication skills.
In addition, group discussion helps understand a subject more deeply and improves ability
to think critically, which will challenge you by asking you questions. More often than not, it helps
the group reach a decision and solve a particular problem with the best solution, based on the
variety of opinions and suggestions. Group discussion also improves listening skills, it requires
you to listen and accept others’ views, and try not to monopolize the discussion. Furthermore, all
participants in the group can gain confidence by being vocal about their opinions that their views
are valuable, they are valued, being respected, and belong to the group.
Therefore, learning about group discussions is very important. Most of the time the
students, even though they are good students, do not know how to deal with a group situation
so then they might not look outstanding in the eyes of others.
Types of group discussion
