Parkside Football Club 1897/2017
2001
After a great success on the field in the 2000 season, the club was moving with uncertain steps. For
the first time in a long while, the club had juniors and a great support staff to help with running the
junior’s football side of the Club. Ray Barber invested a great deal of time and effort in setting up
Parkside’s juniors, starting with recruitment in the 1998.
The Western Times, February 2001
Despite the first division senior premiership in 2000 and promising future with juniors on the field,
the club battled to survive in season 2001. Parkside Football Club was in danger of folding as the club
continued to struggle with severe financial problems.
Loyal Parksiders showed again their determination and commitment to help the club to survive and
avoid danger of folding.
In March 2001, The Western Times published a short item,
“Footy fans should get behind the battling Parkside Football Club's great revival at the Herb Pascal
Pavilion (Hughes Oval), Farnsworth Ave, this Friday (March 16), at 7pm. The Magpies urgently need
$20,000 to keep the club afloat in the Western Region Football League. Compere will be former
Kangaroos, Collingwood, Prahran and Camberwell great Slammin' Sam Kekovich. The panel will
include Olympic water polo gold medallist, Joanne Fox, Footscray's favorite footy son, Doug
Hawkins, and Channel Seven cricket maverick, Merv Hughes.”
