In October 2001, The Mail wrote that John “JB” Barbuto stepped down as Parkside’s head coach.
“Favourite son Phil O'Keeffe is poised to return to the senior coaches box at Parkside for the
Western Region Football League's 2002 first division season.
The former Footscray player was playing coach as the high-flying Magpies won the 2000
premiership.
He coached Sunbury in the Ballarat Football League this year.
Club president Rod O'Connor said O'Keeffe "is in the mix" to replace highly-rated rookie John "JB"
Barbuto, who has stepped down.
"Phil O'Keeffe is in the mix, there's no doubt about that," O'Connor said. "We'd love to have Phil
back." O'Connor added Barbuto "was offered the job".
Barbuto departs the Mery Hughes Oval with his head held high. He performed wonderfully well
under great pressure with Park-side desperately unlucky not to make the finals.
Incredibly, the Magpies had almost folded in the build-up to the season.
Disgruntled star players, including brothers Ali and Ahmed Taleb, walked out on the club only to be
coaxed back by the passionate Barbuto.
Fearless rover Ali Taleb has topped the voting in the club's best and fairest award from centreman
Dennis Ryan.
Taleb enjoyed a fabulous season.”
