Late period (21-30)
This period witnessed internal collapse and foreign invasions
from the Assyrians, Persians, and others, but in some times it
witnessed a kind of prosperity.
Twenty-first dynasty
In this dynasty the Power in the country was distributed between
a priest in the south who ruled from Thebes and a ruler in the
north who ruled from Tanis (Sun of Stone).
Herihor: He was the ruler of the south, the high priest of Amun,
and he was the commander of the army. He reached his influence
during the reign of Ramesses XI, as he appeared in the scenes of
khonsu temple at el Karnak while worshipping gods in the same
attitude of kings, but he was not able to assume power and rule
the throne until after the death of Ramesses XI. Where he usurped
the throne, and at the same time ruling in the north was King
Simandus, who married one of the princesses of the royal house.
One of Herihor’s most important works was reburying the
mummies of the kings that had been stolen by tomb robbers in a
time of chaos.
