Creating a user-friendly multimedia resource required user-testing and I found the
think-aloud sessions ideal for this task. I wanted the ‘Parent Learning Zone’ to
contain only what was necessary to communicate the purpose of the resource (Figure
4.15). I used aspects of the minimalist approach to my design, a philosophy that
focuses on the idea that you must design around the content and include only what is
completely necessary. I wanted to build just enough user interface around the main
content, the reading videos, that would allow the user to navigate the resource with
ease. As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once said, “Perfection is achieved, not when
there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away” (Saint-
58
