14. CONSERVATION
( a ) MAKE A COLLECTION OF PHOTOS, DRAWINGS, POSTERS,
STAMPS, PLANTS AND INSECTS AND DISPLAY THIS AT YOUR PACK
MEETING.
Taking care of, and protecting nature is called CONSERVATION.
But it is not only protecting trees, rivers, birds and animals, but being
careful with garbage, not throwing cans, bottles and rubbish on the
roadside and into the sea and the bushes. Not polluting the air by burning
items which produce a lot of smoke.
( b ) MAKE A LIST OF WAYS YOU CAN SEE WATER BEING WASTED AT
HOME AND AT SCHOOL.
Stopping the waste of water is another part of Conservation. Dripping taps,
leaking pipes, toilet cisterns where the water is always running and taps that don't
turn off.
Look around your school and your home and make a list of water wastage
and give it to Akela. You can also save water by not letting the water run all the
time you are cleaning your teeth.
( c ) DISTRIBUTE INFORMATION TO TOURISTS AND RESIDENTS ABOUT
KEEPING THE BEACHES CLEAN.
Ask Akela to check with the Health Education Department, the Conservation
Department and the Tourist Board to see if they have any printed leaflets or
brochures you could distribute to Visitors and residents. Remember, anything that
is left on the beach could wash into the sea and harm the sea life. The plastic rings
that hold six cans of soda or beer together can get around the neck of a turtle; fish
can get caught in the holes and die. This can pollute the water and also kill off the
sea creatures that we use as food.
Look into the requirements for the World Conservation Badge.
15. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
THE CARIBBEAN IS NOTED FOR CERTAIN KINDS OF NATURAL DISASTERS.
THE MOST COMMON ARE:
( a ) HURRICANES ( b ) EARTHQUAKES
( c ) FLOODING ( d ) DROUGHTS
( e ) LANDSLIDES.
FIND OUT ABOUT THESE DISASTERS – WHAT CAUSES THEM, WHEN WAS
THE LAST TIME ANY OF THESE OCCURRED IN THE BAHAMAS AND WHAT
DAMAGE WAS CAUSED?
