16. WATER ACTIVITIES
( a ) STUDY THE WATER SAFETY RULES AND TELL AKELA
WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT.
(What would you do if you fell in the water and couldn't swim?
1. Keep calm
2. Do not throw your arms about
3. Float on your back
4. Call for help
( b ) What would you do if someone else fell in?
1. Quickly look for a stick, scarf or rope or something to
help pull him to the side.
2. Tell him to try to float if you are unable to reach him.
3. Run for help.
( c ) Never take inflatable airbeds or floating toys on the sea.
Tidal currents and winds can soon carry them, and you, out to sea much further
than you can swim back again.
( d ) To swim in safety.
1. Ask your parents if you may bathe.
2. Never swim just after a meal.
3. Always swim with others.
4. If you cannot swim do not go out of your depth, that is where you cannot
touch the bottom with your toes and have your head above water.
5. Come out of the water before you get cold or tired.
( e ) WITH AN EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTOR, OR ADULT, VISIT A BEACH OR
SWIMMING POOL. FIND OUT ABOUT CURRENTS, REEFS, CLIFFS AND
ROCKS AND HOW THESE CAN CAUSE DANGER TO THE USERS OF THE
WATER.
Currents are movements in the water and in the sea and can drag a
swimmer, or a boat, away from the beach or onto rocks.
A Reef is a natural barrier in the sea consisting of a ridge of rock, coral or
sand, at or near the surface of the water. Reefs are on or near the surface of the
water. Reefs help to reduce the force of the water hitting the shore. When a reef is
removed by man, in order to make anchorages for boats, the sea can start to wash
away the shore. Sometimes old cars and other scrap are dumped at sea to make a
man-made reef to protect the shore or a harbor. Reefs are also home for many
species of fish and other sea creatures.
A Cliff is a steep rock-face on the coast which has no beach below, only
dangerous rocks.
Learn to swim and try for the Swimmer Badge.
