( a ) Hurricanes.
Tropical Depression. An area of low pressure with rotary
circulation of clouds and winds with highest constant windspeeds
        of 38 mph (33 knots).
Tropical Storm. When the rotary circulation of winds
become distinct, and constant wind speeds range between 39 –
        73 mph.
Hurricane. When the wind reached constant speeds of 74
mph, or more, and blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm
        centre, the eye.
Hurricane Watch. Hurricane conditions are a possibility
        within 36 hours.
Hurricane Warning. When winds of 74 mph, or more, high
water and storm surge are expected within a period of 24 hours.

        ( b ) Earthquakes.
This is sometimes violent movement of the earth's surface
that follows a release of energy in the earth's crust.
Dangers associated with earthquakes include the
phenomena of ground shaking, surface faulting, ground failures and
tsunamis (large ocean waves generated by earthquakes under the sea
        or along the coast).

        ( c ) Flooding.
In The Bahamas flooding is usually caused by rain falling on the hills and
filling the drain systems and overflowing. The water eventually runs off into the sea
        or the drain system.

        ( d ) Droughts.
This is when the lack of rain causes the level of the water in the wells to fall
below the delivery level and so the Government water system is rationed to all
areas by shutting off delivery at certain times during the day. Now that we have a
Sea Water Desalination Plant, which converts sea water into fresh water, the lack
of rain should not be too critical.
        ( e ) Landslides.
Usually caused by heavy rains which run down the hill slopes and loosen
the top soil allowing it to slide down the hill. Trees and shrubs have roots which
help to hold the soil together; this is why you should be careful when clearing a hill
site to leave some trees and shrubs standing.
