1. SIMPLE FIRST AID
First Aid is the first assistance or treatment given to a casualty for any injury
or sudden illness before the arrival of an ambulance or qualified medical personnel.
It is very important that you know the correct thing to do if someone is injured.

        (a) KNOW THE PURPOSE OF FIRST AID:

              First Aid serves three purposes:
              1. Stops danger from threatening the life of the casualty.
              2. Stops the casualty from getting worse.
              3. Helps to promote recovery.

        This means:
              1. A casualty in a car accident may have to be removed quickly because of
                   fire, traffic or other dangers.
              2. If a casualty is bleeding badly, you must stop the bleeding and cover the
                   injury.
              3. Arrange for the casualty to get to the hospital or to a doctor.

        (b) KNOW HOW TO TREAT THE FOLLOWING:
        INSECT STINGS:
Remove the sting carefully from the wound with a pair
of tweezers, apply a cloth with ice wrapped in it, or soaked with
clean, cold water. When dry apply some antihistamine cream
        to the area.

                             SMALL CUTS AND GRAZES:

Clean the cut or graze, working away from the
wound, with clean water or use a disinfectant, to
remove any grit or dirt, etc. Pat dry and cover with a
                            plaster or clean bandage.

        BURNS AND SCALDS:

A burn is caused by DRY heat such as a hot iron; a scald
is caused by WET heat such as boiling water or steam from a
kettle. Cool the injury with clean cold water, this will cool the area
and reduce the pain. When dry cover with a clean, dry cloth or
bandage. Do not use cotton-wool or put ointment on the burn
and do not break any blisters. If the burn is serious, send the
casualty to the hospital or to a doctor.
