BLEEDING FROM THE NOSE:
Advise the casualty to pinch the soft part of the nose, breathe through the
mouth and sit with head well forward. Do not let the casualty raise the head. If the
bleeding does not stop, send to the hospital or to a doctor as soon as possible.

                    A SPRAINED ANKLE:

This injury occurs when the ankle is suddenly wrenched or twisted. Have the
casualty sit or lie down with the ankle supported. Expose the ankle and apply an ice
bag or ice wrapped in a cloth or a cloth soaked with cold water to reduce the pain,
swelling and bruising. Put a bandage over the wet cloth to hold it around the ankle.
If water is unavailable do not remove shoes but tie a bandage around the shoe and
ankle to reduce the swelling. Make sure the casualty is able to receive medical
treatment as soon as possible. If you are not sure if the ankle is sprained or broken,
always treat as if it is broken.

                    (c) DEMONSTRATE HOW TO MAKE A LARGE ARM SLING:

The Arm Sling is used to support the forearm, hand
and upper limb. Using a triangular bandage, place one
end under the injured arm and around the neck from
the uninjured tie and with the point at the elbow. Lift
the other end of the bandage and pass it over the front
of the injured arm and tie to the other end with a reef-
knot on the injured side. The reef knot is used
because it will lie flat and not dig in to the casualty. Pin
up the bandage at the elbow or, if you have no pin,
twist the point and tuck it in.
If you do not have a triangular bandage, and are not
wearing your scarf, you can support the arm by the
use of a belt looped around the neck or by tucking the
hand into the neck of the casualty's shirt or blouse.
Then transport to hospital or to a doctor.

                                              (d) KNOW THE DANGERS OF PUNCTURE
WOUNDS FROM NAILS, TOOLS, THORNS ETC.
AND KNOW HOW TO TREAT THE WOUNDS.

Some objects cause puncture wounds and if deep can cause serious
internal injuries. A puncture can also be serious because of dirt and germs on the
object can get into the wound and cause infection. Wash the wound thoroughly, dry
and cover and have the casualty see a doctor or go to the hospital. If the object is
stuck in the casualty DO NOT REMOVE. Put a bandage around it to stop any
bleeding and transport the casualty to the hospital at once.

                                                                                                3
