16. WATER ACTIVITIES
Water is important to all of us and provides us with many activities for young people.
You can enjoy a swim in a pool, lake, river or in the sea at the beach. Many people
have picnics or cook-outs at the beach. Ask Akela to arrange such an outing for the
Pack.
( a ) KNOW THE DANGERS TO SWIMMERS AND NON-SWIMMERS IN POOLS,
LAKE, RIVERS, BLUE HOLES AND AT THE BEACH.
When a non-swimmer is in a swimming pool he should not go any deeper
than where he can touch the bottom with his feet and still keep his head above
water. He should keep near the rail at the side of the pool so that in the event of
difficulties he can grab hold and pull himself out.
There are currents in lakes, rivers and the sea that can drag a person off
their feet, both swimmers and non-swimmers alike. You could be swept downstream
and into deep water in a lake or river by the current or away from the beach and
even onto rocks by the waves in the sea. Take notice of
any warning signs which tell you the safe times to bathe
and which is the safe and which are the dangerous
areas. Do not ignore these signs as they are for your
safety.
( b ) KNOW THE IMPORTANCE OF SUMMONING
ADULT HELP TO ASSIST SOMEONE IN DANGER AT
THE POOL, LAKE, RIVER OR AT THE BEACH.
If you try to help someone in trouble by yourself and
without anyone else knowing what is happening you also
could get into trouble and then there would be two
people in danger. Always summon adult help as adults
are stronger than you and then you could go for more
help or use the Telephone to summon assistance from the emergency services.
( c ) KNOW WHAT IS THE SAFE WAY TO ENTER A POOL, LAKE, RIVER OR GO
INTO THE SEA IF YOU ARE A NON-SWIMMER.
Whenever a non-swimmer enters the water, any water, he should only enter
where the water is calm and where he can touch the bottom with his feet and still
have his head above the water. He should always enter the water carefully and not
jump or dive in, and it is always safer to have an adult present.
Why not try for the Swimmer 2, Rescuer or First Aid Proficiency Badge.
