Ask your Parents and other relatives, especially the older ones, about these
        plants used for medicine. Take notes, find the plants and make sketches, and find
        out what ailments they are used for and show Akela. Read Martha Hanna-Smith’s
        book on local remedies. Obtain some of the seeds, cuttings or tubas and
        plant them and watch them grown.

        ( b ) TALK WITH YOUR PARENTS ABOUT THE WEATHER PATTERNS OF
        EARLIER DAYS AND COMPARE WITH THOSE OF TODAY. DISCUSS THIS IN
        THE PACK.

              Did you know that there was a time when it rained more in certain months
        than it does now? Find out from your Parents or Guardians about the difference.
        Check the Airport's rainfall records and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and see
        how far back their weather records go and see what you can find out about the
        rainfall month by month.
        15. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

              Some disasters are caused by man. Amongst
        the most common in the Caribbean are:
        1. Fire;
        2. Motor Vehicle Accidents;
        3. Pollution of Water Sources.
        ( a ) FIND OUT WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MAJOR
        DISASTERS FROM THE ABOVE LIST IN THE
        BAHAMAS DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS.

              For information about fires visit the Royal
        Bahamas Police Force, Fire and Rescue Service
        Headquarters. For Motor Vehicle Accidents check the
        Police Traffic Unit and some of the major Motor
        Vehicle Insurance companies. For water pollution
        asks at the Department of Conservation and the Water and
        Sewerage Department.

        ( b ) IN YOUR PACK, TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS YOU AND MEMBERS
        OF YOUR PACK CAN DO TO HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE IN DANGER OR HAVE
        PROBLEMS AS A RESULT OF ANY OF THE ABOVE DISASTERS.

              When you hear that the community is helping to clean up after a fire at
        someone's home, you and your Pack could also help. Why not visit victims in the
        hospital who have been in a fire or in an accident.
              Akela could ask the Chief Fire Officer to visit the Pack and give a talk on the
        dangers of fire in the home. Invite your parents and their friends to the meeting to
        listen to the talk.
