THE PACK OR A NATIONAL ASSOCIATION.
Akela could arrange for the Pack to clean up around Scout Headquarters,
Pack meeting place, your church grounds or your school grounds. The Pack could
also join in the International Beach Clean-up Campaign organized by The Bahamas
Conservation Department each year.
If you are interested in nature and plant life why not try for the Naturalist or
the Farmer Proficiency Badge.
8. EXPLORING
( a ) KNOW WHAT A COMPASS IS AND HOW IT WORKS.
You all know what a magnet is; well a compass has a
magnetized needle suspended on a point at its centre. Because
the needle magnetized one end will always be attracted to the
Magnetic North Pole and will point in that direction. The Magnetic
North Pole is in Northern Canada about 1000 miles from the
Geographical North Pole.
As the needle always points in the same direction, even
when you turn the compass body around, you are always able to
find North or any other compass direction you
require. The compass has been in use for over
1000 years. Below is a “Silva Compass”.
( b ) KNOW THE EIGHT PRINCIPLE COMPASS
POINTS AND KNOW HOW TO USE THE
COMPASS TO FIND NORTH.
North and South are the two main compass
points and are in opposite directions to each other. The next two points are East
and West which are also in opposite directions to each other
and at right angles to the North-South line. The next four
points are between the previous main points with the major
point name first. See diagram.
To use a compass to find the north, hold the
compass level and away from any metal object such as your
belt buckle. Turn the body of the compass so that the N
Mark lines up with the north end of the needle. You can
then see the direction of north or any other point you need to
find.
