( a ) KNOW HOW TO USE AND LOOK AFTER A POCKET KNIFE.
When using a pocket knife make sure the blade is open fully before starting
to cut. Always cut away from yourself. When you have finished using the knife wipe
the blades dry and then close them. Always keep the blades sharp and put a little oil
on the pivots. Never play around with a knife that has an open blade.

( b ) UNDERSTAND THE DANGERS OF BROKEN GLASS AND RUSTY NAILS.

Broken glass and rusty nails can cause nasty injuries.
Broken glass can have some very sharp edges and can also leave
glass pieces in the wound. Nails can produce a puncture or a
lacerated wound, Which can become infected if the nail is dirty or
rusty. These injuries should be cleaned immediately and the
casualty taken to the hospital or a clinic. Sometimes these injuries
require an Anti-tetanus injection to prevent infection. After the
accident remove the broken glass or nails from the scene. Be sure
that any broken glass or protruding nails are removed from around
the Pack Den or other places where they could be dangerous.

( c ) KNOW WHAT CAN CAUSE A FIRE IN THE HOME.
Fires in the home can be caused by old and frayed
electrical wiring, overloaded extension cords, kerosene
lamps, tins of gasoline, cooking gas and of course, matches.
Electrical wire in some old houses may have the insulation
eaten away by rats or mice or just perished with age. This
can cause the wires to touch and spark and start a fire.
Kerosene spilt on wood floors, cloth curtains and other
burnable materials will ignite if a flame reaches them.
Gasoline does not burn; it is the vapour given off that can be ignited by a spark or
                    flame.
Leaks in the pipes from cooking gas to the stove will allow the escaped gas
to accumulate and explode if ignited.
If you see smoke or flames coming out of a house or smell gas in a home run
and tell an adult at once.

( d ) KNOW THE SAFE WAY TO FIT AN ELECTRICAL PLUG INTO
THE SOCKET AND TO REMOVE IT.
Electrical plugs should be held firmly, keeping the fingers away from
the metal prongs. Fit the prongs into the socket and press firmly. To
remove, again grip the plug firmly and pull; never pull on the wire as it
could be torn out of the plug connections. Make sure the wires near
the plug are not exposed through the insulation which could give you
                                an electric shock if touched.

                                                                                                5
